London Calling, December 15th
Dear NY Gooners,
The Chavs'
It's games like this that make me feel glad that I have a season ticket. The atmosphere was electric and put paid to the Highbury library label, which just goes to show that when the occasion arises so to do the fans. In fact the only time the crowd went quiet was when we conceded a corner or free-kick, when you could hear a pip drop. When are we going to learn to defend set pieces? We went into this game with the media saying that this was the day that the "champions-elect" would put us in our place but, although we did not win, we showed that we are not yet ready to hand over our crown.
We had the chances to win this game but then again so did they, so a neutral will say that a draw was a fair result; but I'm not a neutral and I'm gutted that TH14 did not put away a chance at 2-2 to win the game. Special mention must go to three players; the first is Almunia who during the build-up this week has been ridiculed by almost everyone in the press and radio but Arsene had enough confidence in him and he repaid that faith with a fine performance. He may not be the long term answer but he will do for now. The other two players that I think deserve special praise are Fabregas and Flamini, two pups who were given no chance against their two more experienced opponents but cometh the hour cometh the man and boy did they cometh. Fat boy Lampard definitely had one of his quieter days and this was down to Flamini's harrying and Fabrigas' fine passing. Talking about fat boy he really has taken the label of one of our most hated opponents: he and John Terry are both cut from the same cloth but for some reason opposition fans do not hate Terry as much as Lampard. Terry seems a fair and honest player but Lampard for some reason comes across as a horrible little shit, the sort of person who, I bet, when he was at school would rat on his mates if he thought he would look good in front of the teacher.
The Chelski fans turned up sang their filthy racist songs and left. Thank god we only have to endure this sort of scum behavior once a season. Friends of mine who sit near the away supporters said that they faced a constant barrage of racial abuse and threats of violence throughout the game, the sort of behavior not seen at grounds for nearly 25 years. When they asked the stewards and police what they were going to do, all they got back in return was "what do you want us to do, arrest them all". Well the simple answer there is, yes and maybe that way they will learn that this sort of Neanderthal behavior is not welcome in modern day football grounds. They should kick this sort scum out of football forever.
All in all it was not the result we were looking for but it could have been much worse and if they think it's all over then they had better get the fat lady to stop clearing her throat because we are not ready to give in.
BBC Radio London Sports Awards?
Around this time of the year awards are being handed out like confetti at a wedding and last week saw the Radio London sports awards. Now, although these awards mean very little to most people, as they are voted for by listeners of Radio London, I thought you might want to see the list of final winners.
Team of the Year
After going the whole season unbeaten there really could only be one winner here, our beloved Arsenal.
Manager of the Season
Well considering the first winner who else could it be but AW... no, it was Ian Dowie for getting Crystal Palace into the Premiership. Apparently guiding your team through the whole season unbeaten in one of the toughest leagues in the world means nothing to some people.
Performance of the Season
Okay I was split on this, either our fine performance coming from behind against Liverpool over the Easter weekend to win 4-2 that give us our final push to the Championship or our draw at the home of our arch rivals to clinch the title. Wrong! Apparently the London listeners think that Millwall's FA Cup semi final win was better than both of those.
Player of the Season
Surely there could only be one winner here, TH14: 30 league goals while helping us go the whole season unbeaten should win this category for him hands down. Wrong again! This year's BBC Radio London player of the season is... Frank Lampard. Being in the top three for both the World and European player of the year plus winning the Premiership does not mean as much as some fat git from South London who won nothing (again) scoring a couple of goals at Euro 2004.
I Heard It Through The Grape Vine
Sol is dating Dido and that's why he will sign a new contract and stay with us. Some fans will do anything to keep our top players at the club
Life After Arsenal
Peter Storey was an important part of our 1971 double winning side scoring vital goals from midfield most notably the injury time equalizer against Stoke in the FA Cup semi-final. He was sold to Fulham to end his playing days. He was fined for running a brothel, we was arrested for trying to import South African Krugerrands and finally imprisoned for smuggling hard porn in the spare wheel of his car from Amsterdam.
Spotted out and about
Jose Antonio Reyes with his family at La Paella Spanish restaurant on the Southgate roundabout, North London.
Players We Have Been Linked With This Week
Anderson Silva (Racing) Brazilian defender/midfielder/forward, not really sure.
Steven Gerrard (Liverpool) Like we have any chance of getting him.
Steve Simonsen (Stoke) Keeper. The last player we bought from Stoke was Steve Bould
Useless Arsenal Trivia
In the 'Old Days' teams would play each other on a home & away basis on Christmas day and Boxing day.
Celebrity Gooner
Michael Watson, former middleweight boxer
This weeks 'Totally Irrelevant' link to Arsenal
We currently have a player on loan at Bournemouth called John Spicer, but pound for pound he would not cost as much as the worlds most expensive spice, Saffron.
All the best,
Teabag

Comments
Pretty inflamatory comments and a bit whingy as well! The fact is that had the Chelsea fans been racist there would have been an immediate FA investigation especially in light of everything going on with the monkey chants on the continent. There was a small minority of fans with the cannibal chant for Vieira but there is no investigation with the exception of Cech's comments about the ref. I don't want to make light of the inexcusable few, but to label all Chelsea fans at the Library as racist is disgraceful.
John Terry is an incredible player and great person, as is Frank Lampard. Both would get a game on your team and you would be thankful to have both players!
I was looking forward to your report, now I'm sorry that I read it!
Anyway, as a side note, the New York Blues made a decision to not sing the "cannibal" song at Nevada Smith's and we didn't sing it even though you lot are a bunch of homophobic expletives! ;-)

Tut-tut Mike
I did not realize you were so bitter. I write my reports as I see it and not to please you so if they are not to your liking then just read Katie’s reports on your site which I am sure will be swayed to more towards Chelsea fans, which is what you would want. This is an Arsenal site after all.
Their were racist chants and everyone heard them but what you are implying is that because the n**ger word was not used then it was ok and just a bit of fun, well it's not because what it they were say is that all black people are cannibals. I also did not claim that all Chelsea supporters are racist but it’s a known fact that there is a right wing element amongst them as there are at Milwall and West Ham. Why do you say we are homophobes? Our club has a strong mix of races, cultures and religions. We must be one of the most tolerant and easygoing group of supporters you will ever come across, happier to have a drink with other fans rather than fight them as I hope you know from your experience with Graham and the other Gooners at Nevada’s’.
Regarding Terry and Lampard, I think that Terry conducts himself like a gentleman both on and off the pitch whereas Lampard acts like a tart. Terry reminds me of Tony Adams, he has had problems in his personal life but when he pulls on his club/country jersey he plays it fair and gives 100%. I would agree with you that Terry would walk into our side as we need a goon centre back but when everyone is fit I am not so sure that Lampard would get a regular spot.
Let’s not let this get out of control because it’s just not worth the hassle. I look forward to meeting you one day and having a drink and a chat about football like true fans and not bitter enemies and please carry on read the column as its nice to get a feed back, good or bad.

I think the racism associated with the cannibal song is a bit weak but strong enough for us New York Blues to not sing that song. My point above was that only a few Chelsea fans sung that song yet you applied that singing to every Chelsea fan at Highbury and claimed it was the worst that you had seen in 25 years! That's totally wrong. It wasn't a big deal because there was no investigation and was barely mentioned in the Chelsea fan hating media. Also, haven't you seen Spurs at the Library? By doing what you did in your report on a forum in another country where the people were obviously not there, your comments could be badly taken here and could cause problems down the road at Nevada Smith's where people watch the games usually while drinking lots of beer. You painted people the wrong colour in your report and that offended me; hence my response.
You also seemed to get angrier the more your typed with regard to the game which is why I didn't understand your anger towards Lampard and Terry. Terry played very well and Lampard had a decent game as well.
I haven't seen Katie's report on the game and I read your reports to get your opinion which I've liked in the past. If I wanted to read a Chelsea report I would go to the Chelsea site. I just felt your report was highly flammable and wrong.
Do you want to read a great report? Go to mi-blues.com and go to the Nevada's piece in the "What's new?" area. This was written by a bloke that came to New York for the weekend as part of the rebuilding of the US Blues. This is really what we are all about in the States. It's singing songs against Grahame and the rest of the Gooners and then drinking and yapping together after the games.
It's nothing personal, Chris, I'll write off the report and look forward to your next report!
By the way, the homophobia comment is because you call us Blues "rent boys" (or male prostitutes) and there was some other song on this board about Chelsea and homophobic content! I wont even get into the pikey song for Duff or comments about fat people (Super Frank is in tremendous shape and definitely not the "Lumpy" character he was at West Ham!). There seems to be quite a bit of bias in this neck of the woods!
If you come to New York, I'll definitely have a pint with you. I'll be in London for the rematch in April with over 60 other Blues from the US (half of them New York Blues!).
Cheers,
Blue Mike

I’m sorry if you misinterpreted my report. The situation you guys have with Graham and the others at Nevada’s is how it should be, good fun and having a drink but I am afraid to say not everyone has your good natured approach and the last thing I would want to do is insight trouble amongst you lot, far from it in fact. I did not say that all Chels’ fans are racist or that they all sang that song but even if was only a minority it’s more then is welcome for my liking. For god’s sake how could I claim that all Chelsea’s fans are racist when my entire wife’s family supports them? What I meant when I said about the 25 years is that, that is what it was like 25 years ago and I never want to see it come back. I lived through it and it was not a nice time to go to games.
We are entering a very grey area here about what is and what isn’t a racist comment so I think we should just put it behind us as it is something better discussed face to face as writing things cannot truly express ones feelings.
With regard Homophobe, I have never heard the term ‘Rent Boys’ till I saw it on this site and I don’t really understand it, it must be an American thing.
Is calling someone a Pikey a racist comment? I suppose it is but I don’t think calling Lampard fat is, and it is something that he has been labeled with from his hammers days that will stay with him till he stops playing.
Football is all about opinions and open discussions and it’s good that we can have these chats; it’s what gives the game its appeal.
The pints are on me when you come over here, you can buy me one when I’m next there.
Regards,
Teabag

Rent Boys is an expression I heard back in the UK years ago (from another team's fans, there was a chant that just went "Chelsea Rent Boys, Chelsea Rent Boys, woah-o, woah-o", or something like that - that at least is what I chant at the NY Blues)... it was a play on the stadium situation they found themselves and a wind-up of the "small" section of homophobe Chelsea fans (we knew they'd hate it). But, despite its homophobe connotations it was referring to the Bridge sell-off...
I'd not say Pikey was racist... it's not an Irish thing, it's a reference to gypsies (specifically British or Irish ones - which is why the racist label probably doesn't stick; it's not a reference to the actual Romance gypsies of eastern Europe, who are actually a seperate ethnic group). I personally don't use it often at all (you'd never see me write it in a post or anything, except, as you saw, in the words of a song). If people are offended by it, I wouldn't bother ever using it again.

Okay, now that I've stopped laughing! Grahame, mate, how on earth do your fans (and your fans only) make Duff a Pikey?? This blond bloke has an Irish accent and nothing more. Where is the gypsy connection?
Rent Boys is for the stadium? Okay, Grahame! Pull the other one! Never been down the Kings Road?
Chris, your on for the pints!
Cheers lads!

He’s just a stereotype of what most people think Pikeys look like that you see around the UK. Round face, fair hair, big forehead with an Irish accent.

"what most people think Pikeys look like " what a crazy statement to make.
And with "irish accent" at then end of this, it is indeed a very racist comment, no different from saying something about a black person.
As for Frankie being Fat, well if thats being Fat I wish I was too. "Fat boy Lampard" what a Neanderthal comment, yet you whine about the same sort of thing from a minority of Chelsea fans, showing that in reality your little different yourself.
And how can you say something like
"Lampard for some reason comes across as a horrible little shit, the sort of person who, I bet, when he was at school would rat on his mates if he thought he would look good in front of the teacher"
If he played for Arsenal you would be cheering him for the fantastic player he is instead of this childish nonsense, you have no idea how he is you do not know him at all.
